Transition to Academic Year Age Grouping (2026–2027 Season)

Beginning with the 2026–2027 season, US Club Soccer will officially shift youth soccer age groupings from a birth-year model to an academic (school-year) model. This new model will use an August 1st cutoff date, replacing the previous December 31st cutoff.

As a club that competes in leagues aligned with US Club Soccer, Ohio Premier Soccer Club will fully transition to the academic year model for the 2026–2027 season.

Change can bring uncertainty — but it can also create opportunity.

Throughout this transition, our focus remains clear: providing clarity for families, ensuring continuity within our club structure, and making decisions rooted in long-term development and competitive team formation.

What is Changing & Why?

  • Age groups will now be determined by academic school year, not calendar birth year
  • Players will participate in the Player Placement Process in the age group that aligns with the 2026–2027 academic year model
  • This change will occur nationwide across clubs and leagues at every age group within US Club Soccer

US Club Soccer is implementing this change to:

  • Better align teams with school-based peer groups
  • Improve social dynamics and team cohesion
  • Create more consistent developmental pathways
  • Reduce year-to-year roster disruption, including challenges faced by “trapped” players

This is a national shift — not a club-specific decision.

How Ohio Premier Will Implement This Change

Ohio Premier will take a structured and competitive approach to this transition — ensuring roster composition, team balance, and long-term player development remain aligned.

Key Points:

  • All players will try out in their academic-year age group for the 2026–2027 season
  • The August 1st cutoff will determine age-group placement
  • Teams will be formed with priority placed on creating balanced and competitive rosters
  • Flexibility may exist on a limited, case-by-case basis

Any flexibility will be evaluated by Ohio Premier staff only after projected roster composition and team needs are considered. Individual movement outside of the academic-year age group will be determined based on what best supports both team structure and the player’s long-term development.

For current Ohio Premier players, placement decisions will be informed by season-long Individual Development Plan (IDP) evaluations completed throughout the year.

Similar to last year, our staff will use IDP data to gain a comprehensive understanding of each player’s:

  • Technical development
  • Tactical understanding
  • Physical readiness
  • Social and emotional growth
  • Training habits and learning environment

This comprehensive approach allows us to build competitive teams while also placing players in environments that support their continued growth — both now and in the future.

Important Clarity For Families

  • Every club aligned with US Club Soccer will be making this transition
  • Teams will continue to be formed based on ability, readiness, roster composition, and long-term development

Our priority remains building balanced and competitive teams at every age group.

The environment may change; the standards do not.
